Houston, we have a chicken house

Posted by Nika On October - 22 - 2007

The young chickens have moved into their new chicken house and are loving it. We are enjoying an indian summer here in central MA so they are doing fine with the transition (we also have some heat lamps for when it gets chilly at night and for the coming weeks when fall gets down to business).

Today we are looking at 83 F as a high so I am hoping they stay cool enough. We have yet to finish the outside enclosure but the husband is working as fast as he can to get it done.

Let me know if you cant see the slide show above!

What do you think?

  1. That looks really cool, I am in awe. I might have to steal that design for a doghouse I need to build.

    BY all means, steal away!

That looks great! I love the clear ceiling to let in the natural light. Usually hen houses are so dark and dreary, this looks very comfortable for your chickens.

  4. Nika says:

Erika: indeed, its very light! I am not sure if chickens are “smart” enough to get mopey or depressed with poor lighting but I think that sunshine should not be under rated:-) Any animals we have should be afforded kindness as we should offer any beings in our care. Life is too short to be mean even for a moment :-)

I was wondering how your chickens did with keeping warm without an insulated roof…

We’re in OH and we have cold nights too but not like MA. Do/Did you add anything for winter warmth?
